ENGLISH

The Department of English, one of the largest departments in the college, came into being with the establishment of the college itself in the year 2005. The department has been an active hub of teaching and learning since its inception, with a focus on fostering critical thinking and motivating students to edify their dispositions in accordance with the college's vision. The Department has always encouraged debates, discussions, writings, research, and publications gathered from the mainstream and margins, sheltering voices responding to the literary canons of the English language and translations into the language in order to provide an academic and scholastic ambience. At present, the department offers an undergraduate programme,  BA - English Language and Literature. Following the syllabus prescribed by the University of Calicut, courses from a wide range are taught. Basic English language skills, basics of different genres of literature, literary theory and literary criticism of western and eastern schools of thought, postcolonial literature, translations from world classics, linguistics, film studies, drama and theatre, women's studies, and research methodology are offered as core courses. These courses inculcate skills in students to create and appreciate literary works and equip them to aspire to higher education and a career in this field of study.

Along with the core courses, courses in journalism and electronic media are taught as complementary courses. This enables them to acquire essential knowledge and practice needed for the media industry and to seek higher studies and a career in that pursuit.

The department serves the other departments for common English courses and offers choice-based open English courses to many students from other departments. The Department offers add-on certificate courses with a scope for competitive examinations and career excellence.

The department facilitates innovative pedagogy through updated and quality instructions along with relevant technological interventions in language teaching. To promote academic excellence of students, the department adopts a blend of formative and summative assessment as well as online and offline learning.

The faculty members of the department share responsibility with the entire college community in shaping the campus as a better centre of knowledge. In addition to the regular teaching-learning hours, the department is engaged with activities to infuse values of social responsibility and community life among the students.
